Family accounts and credits in 2026: Trump Accounts, the child tax credit and FSAs

For 2026 the child tax credit, the child care credit, the dependent care FSA and a brand-new children’s account all changed at once. They interact, and the order you use them in matters. One family, worked through, shows how.

The law behind most of these is Public Law 119-21 (July 4, 2025). The IRS published the 2026 inflation amounts on October 9, 2025 (IR-2025-103) and Trump Account guidance on December 2, 2025 (Notice 2025-68).

One family, worked through

A married couple files jointly with $95,000 of wages. Their children are a newborn born in 2026 and a 6-year-old. Daycare and after-school care cost $9,000 for the year, they expect $2,000 of medical, dental and vision costs, and their state tax rate is 5%. Both employers offer a health FSA and a dependent care FSA.

Step 1: the health FSA is the easy yes

Running the $2,000 of predictable medical costs through a health FSA removes it from federal tax (12%), payroll tax (7.65%) and state tax (5%): about $493 saved, with no interaction with any credit.

Step 2: dependent care FSA or the care credit?

Credit route. AGI after the health FSA is $93,000, so the care credit rate is 35%. With two children the expense limit is $6,000: credit $2,100. Federal tax before credits is $6,800; after the care credit and the child tax credit it is $300, with nothing refundable left over because the credits fit within the tax.
FSA route. Putting $7,500 into the dependent care FSA cuts AGI to $85,500 and federal tax before credits to $5,900, and saves $949 of payroll and state tax. But the $7,500 exclusion wipes out the $6,000 credit limit, so there is no care credit. After the child tax credit, federal tax is $1,500.
Comparison. Credit route: $300 of federal tax. FSA route: $1,500 of federal tax less $949 of extra payroll and state savings, an effective $551. The credit route is better by about $251. At this income the 50%-to-35% credit beats the 24.65% combined saving of the FSA; in the 22% bracket and above the answer usually flips. Run your own numbers in the dependent care FSA calculator.

Step 3: the child tax credit

Both children are under 17 with Social Security numbers, so the credit is 2 × $2,200 = $4,400, far below the $400,000 joint phase-out. In the credit route it absorbs $4,400 of their remaining tax. If their tax were lower, up to $1,700 per child would come back as a refund. The child tax credit calculator shows the split.

Step 4: the newborn’s Trump Account

Because the baby was born in 2026 and is a citizen with an SSN, the parents can elect a Trump Account on Form 4547 and Treasury deposits $1,000. The 6-year-old can also have an account, but no pilot deposit. Whether to add money depends on goals: for college, a 529 grows tax-free for education, and up to $35,000 left over after school can later move to the child’s Roth IRA (see the 529 to Roth IRA rollover calculator); the Trump Account’s growth is taxed later. If an employer offers Trump Account contributions, that money is excluded from the parent’s pay and is the best dollar available. The Trump Account calculator projects the balance at 18. A custodial (UTMA or UGMA) account is the other common choice, but its interest and dividends above $2,700 a year are taxed at the parents’ rate; the kiddie tax calculator shows the cost.

Decision guide

Do you have predictable medical costs? Elect a health FSA for the amount you are sure of, plus up to $680 if your plan has a carryover. If you have an HSA-eligible plan, the HSA usually beats the FSA because it carries over and can be invested. Do you pay for child care? In the 10% and 12% brackets, compare the credit first; it is worth up to 50% of $6,000 at low incomes. In the 22% bracket and up, the $7,500 FSA usually wins. If the care is an adult nanny or sitter you pay $3,000 or more in 2026 to work in your home, you are also a household employer who owes Social Security and Medicare tax, and FUTA after $1,000 in a quarter; the nanny tax calculator works it out. Was a child born from 2025 through 2028? Elect a Trump Account to collect the $1,000 even if you never add to it. Is income near $200,000 single or $400,000 joint? The child tax credit starts shrinking by $50 per $1,000. Did a child turn 17? That child moves to the $500 credit for other dependents.

What to watch for 2027

The IRS had not published 2027 health FSA or child tax credit amounts as of October 22, 2026; they normally arrive with the yearly inflation adjustments in October or November, which is why many open-enrollment guides still show 2026 limits. The $7,500 dependent care limit is set in the statute and is not indexed. Trump Account contribution limits start indexing after 2027.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a dependent care FSA and the child care credit in the same year?

Yes, but every FSA dollar reduces the credit’s $3,000 or $6,000 expense limit, so a full $7,500 FSA leaves no credit.

Is the child tax credit $2,200 in 2026?

Yes, per qualifying child under 17, with up to $1,700 per child refundable.

Do I have to put money in a Trump Account to get the $1,000?

No. Electing the account on Form 4547 for an eligible child born 2025 through 2028 is enough for the federal deposit.

Should I use a Trump Account or a 529 for college?

For education costs a 529 is usually better, because qualified withdrawals are tax-free; Trump Account growth is taxed when withdrawn.

Can both parents each put $7,500 in a dependent care FSA?

No. The $7,500 limit is per household; married couples share it.

What is the 2026 health FSA limit?

$3,400 per employee, with up to $680 carried into 2027 if the plan allows it.
