Volume: How Much Material Do I Need?

Rectangular volume: Length × Width × Depth. A raised garden bed that is 8 ft × 4 ft × 1.5 ft = 48 cubic feet = 1.78 cubic yards. Cylindrical volume (round planters, post holes): π × r² × depth. The Pythagorean theorem in home projects: a² + b² = c² is used constantly. Checking if a room is square: measure 3 ft along one wall and 4 ft along the adjacent wall; the diagonal should be exactly 5 ft (3-4-5 triangle). Angles and Slope

Roof pitch is expressed as rise over run (e.g., 6/12 means the roof rises 6 inches for every 12 inches of horizontal run). To convert pitch to degrees: angle = arctan(rise/run). A 6/12 pitch = arctan(0.5) = 26.6°. Drainage slope for patios, walkways, and grading should be at least ¼ inch per foot (2% grade) away from the foundation. Over a 10-foot patio, that is a 2.5-inch drop from the house side to the outer edge.

Miter cuts for trim and molding: an inside corner requires two pieces cut at 45° each (totaling 90°). For non-90° corners, divide the corner angle by 2 to get the miter angle. Curved walkways, round patios, and arched openings require circle math. Circumference (distance around a circle) = π × diameter. A circular patio with a 12-foot diameter has a circumference of 37.7 feet (for edge material ordering). Arc length (for partial circles) = (θ ÷ 360) × π × diameter.
