Paint and flooring are the two most common DIY home improvement projects — and the two where accurate material estimation saves the most money and frustration. Ordering too little means mismatched batches and wasted time. Ordering too much means wasted money. This guide covers the math for both: how to calculate exactly what you need, which materials perform best for each application, and current cost benchmarks to budget accurately.

Paint: Coverage and Estimation

Standard interior latex paint covers 350–400 square feet per gallon per coat. Most walls require 2 coats for full coverage (especially when changing colors). To calculate wall area: perimeter of room × ceiling height, minus window and door openings (approximately 20 sq ft per window, 20 sq ft per door). A 12×14 room with 8-foot ceilings and 2 windows/1 door needs roughly: (52 ft perimeter × 8 ft) − 60 sq ft = 356 sq ft of wall. At 375 sq ft/gallon coverage with 2 coats: 356 × 2 ÷ 375 = 1.9 gallons → buy 2 gallons.

Paint TypeCoverageBest ForCost/Gallon
Flat/Matte350–400 sq ftCeilings, low-traffic rooms$25–$50
Eggshell/Satin350–400 sq ftLiving rooms, bedrooms, hallways$30–$55
Semi-gloss350–400 sq ftKitchens, bathrooms, trim$30–$55
Primer300–350 sq ftBare drywall, drastic color changes, stains$20–$40

Premium paints ($40–$70/gallon) generally provide better coverage and durability, often achieving full coverage in fewer coats. Use the Paint Calculator for exact quantities.

Add 10% waste factor for rectangular rooms, 15% for diagonal installations, 20% for irregular layouts. Use the Flooring Calculator and Carpet Calculator for exact material quantities.

LVP has become the default recommendation for most homeowners because it is waterproof (unlike laminate and hardwood), durable (resistant to scratches and dents), easy to DIY install (click-lock, no glue), and affordable ($3–$8/sq ft). It works in every room including bathrooms, kitchens, and basements. The only rooms where other materials may be better: bedrooms where carpet’s warmth is preferred, or high-end living spaces where real hardwood adds character and resale value. Frequently Asked Questions

How much paint do I need for a room?
Measure wall area: room perimeter × ceiling height, minus windows (20 sq ft each) and doors (20 sq ft each). Divide by 375 (coverage/gallon) and multiply by 2 (coats). A typical 12×14 room needs ~2 gallons.
Which flooring is best for most homes?
Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) has become the default for most rooms: waterproof, scratch-resistant, easy DIY install, $3-8/sq ft. Works everywhere including bathrooms and basements. Real hardwood for character in living spaces, carpet for bedroom warmth.
How much flooring waste factor should I add?
10% for rectangular rooms, 15% for diagonal patterns, 20% for irregular layouts. Always round up — returning excess is cheaper than ordering a second batch that may not match.
Do I need primer before painting?
Yes for: bare drywall, drastic color changes (dark to light), covering stains, and glossy surfaces. Not always needed for same-color touch-ups or repainting similar colors over properly prepared surfaces.
Can I install flooring myself?
Click-lock LVP and laminate are excellent DIY projects — no special tools required, most rooms done in a day. Tile is moderate difficulty (requires thinset, spacers, grouting). Carpet stretching is difficult. Hardwood nailing requires specialized tools.
