When you can give again, by donation type, with the yearly limits
Updated October 2026
1. Take the date of your last donation. 2. Add the waiting period for that donation type. 3. If you have already reached the yearly limit, wait until 12 months after the earliest donation in that 12-month window. The waiting periods let your body replace what you gave: red cells take weeks, while platelets and plasma return within days.
Example. Whole blood on September 1, 2026, plus 56 days, is October 27, 2026. Giving on each eligible date after that gives December 22, 2026 and February 16, 2027.
| Donation type (Red Cross) | Wait between donations | Next date after Sept 1, 2026 | Yearly limit | Most you could give from Sept 1, 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Whole blood | 56 days | October 27, 2026 | 6 | 6 |
| Power Red | 112 days | December 22, 2026 | 3 | 3 |
| Platelets | 7 days | September 8, 2026 | 24 | 24 |
| AB Elite plasma | 28 days | September 29, 2026 | 13 | 13 |
The intervals and limits are the American Red Cross’s (Eligibility Requirements page, accessed October 22, 2026). Other blood centers follow the same FDA minimums but may set their own schedules.
FDA regulations set the floor every U.S. blood center must meet. 21 CFR 630.15(a) limits whole blood or a single unit of red cells by apheresis to “no more than once in 8 weeks,” and a two-unit red cell donation such as Power Red to once in 16 weeks. Under 630.15(b)(6), a plasma donor must wait 8 weeks after giving whole blood, or 2 days if the device’s extracorporeal volume is under 100 mL. Commercial Source Plasma centers work under 21 CFR 640.65, which allows collections “not less than 2 days apart” and no “more frequently than twice in a 7-day period.” That is why a paid plasma center can see you twice a week while the Red Cross’s AB Elite program asks for 28 days.
Red Cross minimums as of October 2026: whole blood, at least 16 or 17 depending on state law (16-year-olds need parental consent where allowed) and 110 lb. Power Red: men at least 17, 5′1″ and 130 lb; women 19 to 74, 5′3″ and 150 lb. Platelets and AB Elite plasma: at least 17 and 110 lb. AB Elite plasma is only for type AB donors, whose plasma can go to patients of any blood type. Everyone must be healthy and pass a hemoglobin check on the day.
The donation type and date are on your donor app or card. The count and earliest date matter mainly for platelet donors, who can reach 24 in a year well before the weekly interval would stop them.
Deferrals for travel, medications, tattoos, illness or low hemoglobin; waits when switching between donation types, which depend on the procedure and the blood center; autologous and therapeutic donations, which can be more frequent under a doctor’s order; and paid plasma center schedules.
Counting 8 weeks as two months. 56 days from September 1 is October 27, not November 1. Assuming platelets every week all year: the cap is 24. Booking Power Red at 8 weeks: it takes 16. Taking aspirin before platelets: the Red Cross asks for 2 full days without aspirin before platelet donation. Skipping iron: frequent red cell donors can run low on iron; ask about your ferritin.
