Score needed on the final = (target − current grade × (1 − final weight)) ÷ final weight. Going into a final worth 30% with an 85%, you need (80 − 85 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = 68.3% to finish with an 80%, 35.0% to keep a 70%, and 101.7% for a 90%, which is out of reach without extra credit. In a points-based class, the final's weight is its share of all points: 200 final points on top of 500 so far is 200 ÷ 700 = 28.6%.

How the Final Exam Formula Works

Your course grade after the final is a weighted average of two parts: everything before the final, and the final itself. Written out, course grade = current grade × (1 − w) + final score × w, where w is the final's weight as a decimal. Solve that for the final score and you get the formula above. Two numbers fall out of it that are worth knowing before you study: the grade you keep with a zero on the final (current × (1 − w): 59.5% in the 85%/30% example) and the most you can reach with a perfect final (59.5 + 30 = 89.5%).

Score Needed for a B (80%) by Grade Going In and Final Weight

Each cell is the final exam score needed to finish at exactly 80%. Read across to see how much a heavier final helps a student who is behind and costs a student who is ahead.

Grade going inFinal 15%Final 20%Final 25%Final 30%Final 40%

70%136.7% (out of reach)120.0% (out of reach)110.0% (out of reach)103.3% (out of reach)95.0%

The 80% row is the same in every column: if you are sitting at exactly your target, you need to match it on the final whatever the weight. Below it, a heavier final is your friend; above it, a heavier final is more risk.

Points-Based Classes

If your syllabus gives every assignment points instead of category weights, use the points mode. The calculator adds the final's points to the points possible so far, so a 200-point final in a class with 500 points already graded weighs 28.6% of the course. With 425 of 500 points (85%) and an 80% target, you need 0.80 × 700 − 425 = 135 of the 200 points, which is 67.5%.

When This Math Doesn't Match Your Class

The formula assumes the final simply counts for its stated weight. Read your syllabus for rules that change it: a final that replaces your lowest test score, dropped quizzes, a curve, a minimum score required on the final to pass, or a category that is not graded yet (put only graded work into the current grade, or the weight of the missing work makes the result wrong). Letter cut-offs here are the common 10-point scale (90/80/70/60); schools and instructors set their own, so check yours.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do I need on my final to get an A?
Use 90% as the target (93% if your school's A starts there). With an 88% going into a final worth 25%, you need (90 − 88 × 0.75) ÷ 0.25 = 96%.
What is the lowest grade I can get on my final and still pass?
Set the target to your passing grade, often 60% or 70%. With a 72% and a 20% final, keeping a 60% needs (60 − 72 × 0.8) ÷ 0.2 = 12%. The calculator also shows the grade you keep with a zero on the final.
How much will my final exam affect my grade?
Every point on the final moves your course grade by the final's weight: on a 25% final, 4 extra points on the exam is 1 point on the course grade. A final worth 40% can move a grade by up to 40 points.
Why does the calculator say my target is out of reach?
The score needed is over 100%. Even a perfect final only gets you to current × (1 − weight) + weight × 100. Ask whether extra credit or a dropped-score policy applies, or set a lower target.
Is this the same as the grade calculator?
No. The grade calculator works out your current grade from weighted categories; this tool takes that grade and works forward to the final.

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Pick how your class is graded — weighted percentages, or total points.
  2. Enter where you stand — your current grade and the final's weight, or your points so far and the final's points.
  3. Set your target — the course grade you want; the results also list 90/80/70/60.
  4. Try a final score — see the course grade you end up with for the score you expect.
